No Walk In The Park

Victims of Alzheimer’s disease have to live in a growing maze of confusion every single day of their lives.

Only the most recent memories are affected at the beginning, with the disease slowly working its way back to the older ones, until the victim finally loses her own identity and that of her surroundings…

It all begins with small losses of memory like misplacing your keys, and forgetting appointments. Then you will forget the kettle on the stove or you won’t remember to turn off the tap when filling the bath tub. Misplaced objects will suddently turn up in the most unexpected places, and you will try to fit yet another carton of milk on the refrigerator’s shelf, beside the six other cartons already there that you didn’t recall buying…

One day you will go out of the house and walk to the next corner only to find out that you are so disoriented you can’t even find your way back home. The same feeling will choke you when you find yourself looking for that ironing board at the local playground.

On some mornings, you will have breakfast twice in a row, wondering at the second round why you are not so hungry. It is also possible that you won’t even remember to use the bathroom on time or where it is located.

You will start asking around why your loved ones don’t come to visit anymore, when they actually came and hugged you on the day before…

There will come a point when you will think that it’s time to leave for work, and that you have to get the kids ready for school… but the kids are grown now, with children of their own, and you have retired from work years ago!

Who is that stranger talking to you now? What does he want? Why does he claim to be your husband? Your man is at work and will be back only at suppertime; he can’t be here talking to you now, can he? And what are you doing in this strange place? It all seems so vaguely familiar, yet so scary…

Who are you?
