Christina came home from school and entered the house. “Hello mum, how was your day?” she asked. “Fine love.” Mum replied “But your kitten has been up to mischief again!” “OH NO” Christina shouted, picking up her grey kitten with two white sox, “Two-Sox hasn’t been at the fish tank again, has he – are, are the goldfish alright?” Mum told Christina to go and see what Two-Sox had been up to.

Christina ran into the lounge room and there to her horror, she discovered that there were no fish left. Two-Sox had EATEN all four of them! Sam, her big sister, will go beserk, she thought. They were all her pets. She had bought and paid for them. She’d even given them names! What can I do?

FLASH – Christina came up with a solution. She would simply go to the Pet Shop and buy four new fish and hope that Sam wouldn’t be able to tell the difference! Walking back into the kitchen, Christina told mum her plan for keeping the peace and asked if she could go over town. Naturally, mum said yes and off she sped. The Pet Shop was only a ten minute walk from home, so Christina had ample time to go there and back before Sam arrived home from work.

On reaching the shop, Christina checked out the tanks for identical fish to the ones that Two-Sox had eaten. To her dismay, she discovered that there weren’t any Fantails left and asked Mr Wright the owner, if he was expecting any in? “Sorry Christina, not until early next week.” he said. “Oh no!” she replied. “Why are you so worried?” asked Mr Wright concerned.

“Oh Mr Wright, I’m in quite a dilemma.” confessed Christina and proceeded to tell him the whole dreadful story. Mr Wright was a very wise and kind man and thought the problem over carefully. Afterall, this needed to be nipped in the bud. Two-Sox had played with the fish before and splashed around a bit, but NEVER eaten any! If Two-Sox continued with his home fishing trips, this could become an expensive past-time for her!

“I have it.” said Mr Wright, “I know of a way to cure your naughty kitty of his expensive new hobby!” Christina’s face lit up! "How Mr Wright, what can we do to remedy this problem of mine?‘’ she asked. “Well, see those strange little fish in the tank over there. The ones with the big mouths?” “Yes.” Christina answered gingerly. “Wwhat about them?” “Those little fish,” said Mr Wright, "Are called Piranha and once they give your kitty a sharp nip on his paw, he’ll soon learn to keep his sooty foot out of the fish tank!"

GREAT! thought Christina, this will solve ALL our problems and stop Two-Sox from EATING UP all my pocket money. Christina paid for the Piranha, thanked Mr Wright for his help and hurried home. When she arrived home, mum asked her about the strange looking fish. “They’re Piranha mum and Mr Wright said they will stop Two-Sox from eating any more of Sam’s fish. In fact, he said they will cure Two-Sox of his
nasty habit once and for all!”

Christina poured the NEW fish into the tank and sat back and thought, while she watched the fish swimming around in the tank. Sam will obviously notice that these AREN’T her beloved Fantails, so I guess I’ll have to tell her the truth about what happened, when she comes in the door. Which she did!

And Two-Sox? Well it’s funny you should wonder. Mr Wright was correct. The Piranha did cure Two-Sox of his fishing. You see . . . . . .

Christina has the only cat around with one white paw . . . . . . . and ONE front leg!
