Artist's Description

Every morning I awoke in our seaside B&B in Kaikoura New Zealand, I took a dawn walk with my camera. Every day it was clear. Until the last morning when I was greeted by these amazing blue and pink sunrise clouds! Kaikoura I located on the east coast of the South Island of New Zealand about 180 km north of Christchurch. Until 2016, Kaikoura was famous as a place for whale watching as well as other wildlife experiences. Since 2016, it is also ‘famous’ as the location of a 7.8 magnitude earthquake, one of the most powerful in New Zealand. It was through reading about the earthquake that I learned of the wildlife around Kaikoura, and so our visit there in 2017 was directly attributable to that natural disaster. The Kaikoura Peninsula extends into the sea south of the town, and the resulting upwelling currents bring an abundance of marine life from the depths of the nearby Hikurangi Trench. The town owes its origin to this effect, since it developed as a centre for the whaling industry. Today the whale watching tours offer a near-complete refund if you don’t see whales since there is a resident pod of male sperm whales in the area. Fur seals also lounge on the rocks on the edge of town, albatrosses and petrels are also common.
