Artist's Description

I waited impatiently for 1 1/2 hrs for sunset to see the light at the Pensacola Lighthouse. Sunset was at 7:05 pm. I knew, after having chatted earlier with someone in the gift shop, that the light didn’t come on for nearly 20 minutes after sunset. If I hadn’t been told that tidbit of info, I might have left too early, thinking that the lighthouse wasn’t lit at all. But finally, my reward! It’s first order Fresnel lens is amazingly brilliant, and at close range looks like a gigantic lighted egg atop the tower! Quite worth the wait! The current lighthouse is the third in Pensacola and stands 150 feet (46 m) tall. It also sits on a 40-foot (12 m) bluff on the Pensacola Naval Air Station, placing the light 190 feet (58 m) above sea level. The new location allows the tower to serve as the rear range light marking the passage across the Pensacola Bar. The Pensacola Light remains an active aid to navigation. The lighthouse tower and associated buildings were placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
