Father's Seed

His father’s arms wrapped him tight
Whispering farewell with an early kiss goodnight
The boy held on not wanting to release
The father closed his eyes and felt his heart cease
Tears surfaced and a deep breath he took
The boy cried as his body shook
There was no explanation no words to console
Just the phrase I love you his tongue let roll

As he pried his son’s grasp to turn and walk away
Every bone in his body begged him to stay
He promised to give himself to the greater good
Next to his adoptive brothers he commanded and stood
His son cried a plea echoing in daddy with a sniffle of please
He did not stop for he would certainly buckle at the knees
Honor and courage is what this was for
It’s all fair, right, in love and war?

As his daddy disappeared from sight so did hope
He cried all night the tears bound him like a rope
Months passed with letters here and there
Until a final one came and committed an unfair
Daddy would be coming home but not to stay
No more running the bases in a baseball game
No more laughing and painting one another
No chance of mommy and him making a brother
No more love or hugs or kisses good night
This was so wrong how unfair where’s the right?

The funeral was like a production of stage
The boy was a prison of pent up rage
His breathing shallow with feelings so raw
He wanted his daddy, his father, his pa
The will was read a day or two later
The anger was creating a small hater
His father had nothing to leave no things to pass on
The little boy just wanted his daddy ungone

So words were read so all could hear
Of what he left and who would get what gear
They boy’s name was said with a whisper so soft
So silent it was someone just had to cough
The boy looked up and when his attention was seen
The words were spoken loud crisp and clean

“To my son,” the boy to the words was soon to be bound
For what was to be said would be to him profound
“I will give you all that I had”
The boy felt sad with a hint of glad
“My courage and strength so you can take any problems head on
My powerful love so to others you may bond
My caring and understanding so that you will open that locked door
My smile so a girl will look and adore
My last name so that you can give the world more us
My calm so that you can do the minor things without fuss
My arms so that you can pass on our hugs to all in need

“You are my son, my priceless gift you are my seed
I wish to have seen you cultivated and grow
I wish I could teach you all that I know
I am so proud to have you as my son
My one and only—-my only one
Don’t be sad
For you are the one that got the best of what I had
You will miss me but one day together we’ll see
And then you’ll get a huge bear hug from me
I love you—-don’t cry
Wipe that tear from your eye
Smile and let people see
Smile and glow and you’ll reflect me.”

The will was finished and the boy beamed
He had the best gift or so to him it seemed
The rage was gone and the hugs returned
Instead of anger love there did burn
He decided to be his father so others could know
That he was the farmer and his son he did sow
The words were framed and he kept them to read
He smiled knowing he was his father’s seed

I guess I was thinking about how it would feel to not have a father always there that was dedicated to something else and someone else…..how would it feel if what a child wanted he never got…..
