Deadvlei and Sossusvlei sand dunes, Namibia, Africa.
Dead Vlei, Namibia, Africa. Dead Vlei means dead marsh or lake. It is the name of an awe-inspiring white clay pan situated in the salt pan of Sossusvlei, in Namibia. It is estimated that these acacia trees have been dead for more than nine hundred years. Frozen in time, their twisted and contorted branches immovable even against the occasional breeze. The feminine curves of Sossusvlei’s rich ochre sea of sand, rise tantalisingly to almost 1,000 feet (305metres), which is 300 feet (91metres) more than their nearest rivals in Arabia.
