Artist's Description

Simultaneous with the Samjjana exhibition at Global Gallery, I was showing this rather large and impressive work at the Art Sydney Fair in the Royal Hall of Industries @ Fox Studios. I was with the TAP Gallery stand. The piece itself is 1.5m tall and measures 1.3m wide, and sits up on 30cm legs. It’s framed in a hefty timber frame with a threaded steel reinforcing rod running right thru the centre on a raking joiner. I’ve capped the rod with threaded brass nuts to pull the timber in and stop it from ‘spreading’.

’’It’s About Life, Actually’’ was created in 2005 for the Adelaide G.A.S./Ausglass Conference Members’ Exhibition at Light Square Gallery.

Lots of different glasses used here, many different techniques. First time I’ve ever really used true engraving to any great extent. Lots of lead carving with chunky 25mm leads. Always experimenting.

Art Sydney is an annual show (it started some years back as The Affordable Art Show) and a prestigious one at that. Also very expensive to exhibit there. the piece didn’t sell, but it certainly raised a few eyebrows. First time in its 5yr history that stained glass has been shown at the Fair. One chap actually made the comment: ‘’Splendid! I haven’t seen decent stained glass since Leonard French!’’ I was pretty chuffed by that.
