Artist's Description

77cm dia. suspended in a sandwich frame of MDF, just finished a day before the exhibition opening, which was 15th Oct. As with Circus Chaos this piece illustrates one of the tracks on MaryJane Leahy’s CD of the same name.

Maryjane was the victim of sexual abuse at a very young age. Sweet Innocence describes the rediscovery of the innocence of childhood, composed after a breakthrough during counselling as an adult.

Laid over the top of the guitar work, both at the beginning and at the end of the track, is the sound of children playing, singing and giggling. The central portrait here is of the composer as a four year old. The surrounding images are collected from my photo albums and feature my own children, with whom I am still gradually re-establishing a relationship after many years of separation. So the piece has deep meaning for me also.

I took the opportunity here to explore the technique of screen printing with glass paints for the first time. The initial experiments were quite successful so even tho I was really pressed for time I went ahead and had some screens made up. It’s a satisfying technique with lots of potential and something I intend exploring in greater depth.
