Artist's Description

Jack-O-Lantern Mushroom (Omphalotus olearius)

Although the tunnel is vacant right now, here in the early stages of the crowd of burgeoning mushrooms, later on, it is a secret hiding place for insects to dine and romance. The mushrooms seem to pounce out of the ground, put on a great show for a few days of growing and growing, then they begin to fade. As they do, bugs gather and mold spore appears on and around the fungi colony, a layer of white dust, a really thick layer of white dust. (See next photo to see dust.)

Photo taken at the edge of a grassy clearing in the deep, dark forest in the mountains of North Carolina, USA in Macon County near the small town of Franklin.

Longing to get a close-up peek inside the orange tunnel and wanting to see both foreground and background in one image, I used two photos, merging them using: Microsoft Office Publisher, Paint,Roxio Photosuite 10 (cloning tool),
