Artist's Description

evidence of midday sun,
shadow and fern

a spider’s web spun
stretch from frond to frond

tree shadows of May
soon will give way

Do you know the name of this fern? It grows on a thick straight-up stem about knee high with these leaves in this triangle shape (like in photo) that grows sort of parallel to the ground. I have heard the local folks call it “Walking Fern” but the famous ‘Walking Fern’ is not this. The colonies of this fern can seem to walk, they send out roots or rhyzomes to new locations nearby where new plants emerge. If you transplant them, they rarely stay where you put them.

Photo taken in the beautiful mountains of North Carolina, USA in Macon County near Franklin in the Nantahala National Forest – Southern Appalachia very near The Great Smoky Mountains.
