Here is my first photo of 2011: A Ringed Hognose Snake from my house near Pailon, Bolivia. I believe it is Lystrophis semicinctus but I could be wrong so feel free to correct my ID.
This was one exciting find, near the top of my “creatures to find in Bolivia” list! These guys spend much of their time underground using their upturned nose, which gives them their name, to dig. They feed primarily on toads. Their coloration mimics Coral snake which wards off predators but unfortunately often gets them killed by humans.
