Artist's Description

A male Harlequin Long-Horned Beetle (Acrocinus longimanus) from Los Lagos Resort near Arenal Volcano, Costa Rica. June 2009.

These giant, beautiful beetles are wood boring beetles in the family Cerambycidae. They lay their eggs in dead trees where the larvae feed for up to 8 months before they pupate. You can tell this one is a male by it’s very long front legs. These beetles are quite loud and intimidating when in flight.

This photo is on exhibit at the VI International Photography Exhibition: “Beetles and Weevils” in Serbia.
