The Lucky Singer

The singer sang a song about flowers that popped out of cans of diet soda and turned into potato chips. He lined the children up along a park bench and gave them cookies that had been baked by his Aunt Clara, who he had visited with that very morning. The sky was a blue as he could remember ever seeing it and the trees glistened with sun-licked leaves and vibrated with the churn of butterfly wings.

The singer stopped at a church on the way home. He said a prayer for the children and lit a candle for Aunt Clara. Then he decided to stop and get a cold drink at the corner convenience store. Since he had no money he scanned the room for a water fountain and hoped if there was one it was refrigerated water. A young man in the corner wept and the owner of the shop had eyes that were wide with fear. At the back of one aisle stood a man in a beige running outfit that was aiming a shotgun at the shopkeeper.

The singer shoved over a few cases of organic chili that had been left in his path and threw a jar of pickles toward the gunman.

The police arrived at the exact moment the robber lost hold of the shotgun.

“Lucky for me that fellow showed up,” The shopkeeper said.

“Lucky for you we were in the neighborhood. Someone called and said there was a crazy guy giving cookies to the kids in the park. Otherwise every cop in the district is over at the airport because there’s been a bomb threat. When we got to the park the kids pointed us in this direction.”

“Lucky. Real lucky,” The store owner said, grabbing a broom.

Another policeman looked up from where the singer lay in a pool of blood. “This guy’s gone.”

“That’s what you get for being trigger happy. What did you shoot at him for anyway.”

“I thought he was one of the perps. He looks like it. Doesn’t he?”

The gunman glared at them all with a superior hatred. No remorse. No regrets. Just anger that he’d been caught.
