Artist's Description

The ruined church of stone near Faversham lies just to the north of Watling Street – The great Roman road between Dover and London. The first building on this site was a Roman-British pagan mausoleum and is the ONLY known example in Britain to be incorporated into a later Christian Church.Excavations of this structure suggest that it dates to the middle of the 4th century AD.It was adapted to form the chancel of a christian church possibly as early as the 7th century ( Saxon period ) .It was extended again in the 13th century and dedicated to Our Lady of Elwarton. It was abandoned in the 16th century
