The Ice Queen

I remember ice,
Ice encasing dark emerald and amber leaves, scarlet berries, and soft brown branches.
Ice expanding on, strengthening the spider’s web.
Ice dripping, slipping off the tree.
I remember ice.

I remember the sun,
The sun struggling to heat the frost laden air that allowed the wonder we see.
The sun hitting the ice tree and gleaming through it.
The sun alive against the foggy, drab sky.
I remember the sun.

I remember steam,
Steam blowing from our mouths, as we constantly chattered.
Steam rising and clouding around us.
Steam ascending from the road, ascending higher than the trees.
I remember steam.

I remember all of us,
All of us laughing and running, rushing, slipping and tripping around.
All of us sucking on ice covered twigs, never caring what might have been there first.
All of us caressing and fondling, in an effort to fully take in the icy tree through touch.
I remember all of us.

I remember numbness.
Numbness of hands that gripped icicles too long.
Numbness of ears that remained uncovered in the rush out the door.
Numbness of noses that dripped nearly as much as the ice that vanished.
I remember numbness.

I remember the Ice Queen,
The Ice Queen, her altitudinous figure perfectly poised.
The Ice Queen graciously deigning to accept our admiration and delight.
The Ice Queen’s impressive splendour dimming in the sun’s melting warmth.
I remember the Ice Queen.
