When I Was Growing Up

When I was young I remember how my dad would tell me about all the different kinds of people in the world.

“You have to watch out who you trust.” He would tell me while we sat on the front porch watching cars go by on the road. I would always ask him why even though we had already had this talk many times before.
“Because there are people out there who will take everything you tell them and tell someone else, there are people who will use you for your money, there are people who will take all you have and leave you with nothing, and then there are people who will pretend to be your friends when really they don’t have any friends at all.”
But of all the people my dad warned me of, I never met one person who was all of those things…until I met her. She is both sweet and sharp tongued. Her moods are like the dessert, sometimes she’s burning hot and other times she’s the very chill in the cool dessert night. She can breathe in ice and spit out fire, Say words that seem to mean one thing but are like a locked box with some secret inside. Her life seems to be like a sad story with no ending and yet there are times when it isn’t so bad. She will buy into things easily but sell out hard. She will say she doesn’t need the money but have her hand out the whole time.
Yes she is many things and some things I still don’t yet see, But one thing I do see above it all. She is the most human of human beings. Which overall is really the best thing about her. So many people walk through life showing only their best, and sometimes worst, qualities. The kind of people my dad warned me about. But not many walk this earth in the form they were given…human.
It’s these people who I look out for simply because they are quickest to show themselves in the skin they were born in, But my dad never warned me of these people, these beasts, when I was young. He would warn me of the people he knew of while I sat next to him staring at my spider man action figure, but he had never met anyone like her either to warn me of.
