Artist's Description

The ridiculously rare female Dark Bordered Beauty moth. Its only known English site is Strensall Common near York. There are 2 further sites in Scotland.
in 2006 I joined a count, about 30 people involved. We saw 56.
Numbers have fallen so dramatically through fire, flood, grazing and maybe factors not understood, that in 2015 the high count was 6. Yes, that’s right -6!!!
Butterfly Conservation launched a huge research & conservation effort, building exclosures around creeping willow, the larval food plant.
In 2016 the peak count was 42. There is a count on July 14th, it will be interesting to hear the result.
In 2006 I saw my first and until July 3 this year, only, DBBs. I saw 5 insects, 3 girls, 2 boys to my great delight. Not only that, I was able to get a few photos.
