Artist's Description

The London Plane Tree (Platanus × acerifolia, London plane) is an inspiring tree, with beautiful round bobble like seed pods which have inspired a lot of my art work over the years. The London plane is used extensively as a street tree in major cities and towns around the world because of its resilience to warm weather, its benefits as a shade tree, resistance to breakage and tolerance of urban pollution. All qualities which any urban dweller needs!

This black and white design is one I am particularly pleased with, as with the strength and boldness it communicates, it also has a delicate touch, in the lace like patterns formed by the bobbles and ends of the branches. Organic and relaxing, strong and inspiring. When quarter-sawn the timber of the London Plane has a distinctive and highly decorative appearance of dark reddish-brown flecks against a lighter background and is known as Lacewood. Hence the inclusion of Lacewood in the title…Not the same as the sawn timbre in appearance, but definitely communicating a sense of lace!
