Excerpt - The Things I Carry

“…I carry a small rock in my left pocket everywhere I go. It’s roughly shaped like a heart. He brought it back from Canada, a place he went to for a week, a place I was jealous of because it was with him and I wasn’t. I keep it with me even when he’s there. It makes watching him go a bit easier; as if he’s leaving a part of himself with me. He has no idea.
I carry a heart that beats love and passion for him. My Peanut Butter. I carry the feeling from when we first held hands. I carry the feeling from when we first kissed 3 months into our relationship; we were each other’s first kiss. I carry how I felt that first time we slow danced to Sixteen Candles at Genevieve’s Sweet Sixteen. I carry us being together, watching the world in silence. Being comfortable.
Being in love.
I carry the feeling I get when he places his hand on my knee.
On my hip.
On my face,
my neck.
I carry a mental map of his features. The freckles in his eye, the length of his lashes. The beauty mark on his neck. The tooth in his bottom row of teeth that’s slightly crooked, slightly goofy. His defined jaw line. The outline of his lips that I trace with my fingertips. His scent. His taste. The softness of his piano hands. The soft bounciness of his brown hair with natural reddish highlights.
Every aspect of him, everything that I love unconditionally, I carry….”
