Artist's Description

The Megalong Valley in New South Wales, Australia, lies south of Blackheath in the Blue Mountains, about two hours’ drive west of Sydney. Dry Ridge Estate is a winery next to the Six Foot Track – a 45 km long track from the site of the Explorers Tree through the valley to Jenolan Caves.

Following a visit in 2010, I was inspired to try to capture the view from what is now the wine tasting area at Dry Ridge Estate. Back then, it was an area of picnic tables and, from memory, barbecues. The view I created here no longer exists quite like this – the foreground has been upgraded with tables, umbrellas and more permanent infrastructure items to enable the owners to offer outdoor wine tastings. It’s a lovely way to sit and while away an hour or two, in the cool mountain air with a view across the vineyards and valley to the ranges beyond.

With a watercolour base and added oil pastel and ink, this soft, hazy artwork captures the feel of the valley on a summer morning.
