Artist's Description

When the foundation stone was laid for the Garrison Church on June 23, 1840, Bishop William Grant Broughton, first bishop of Australia (then New South Wales), declared that the new church building be called the Church of the Holy Trinity.

However, due to the close proximity of and use by the military from the nearby Garrison, it instead became known as ’the Garrison Church

It was built out of rock quarried from the Argyle Cut and on the 7th August, 1843, services began. On 10th September that same year, the first baptism was performed and little more than a month later the first marriage took place.

Possibly the oldest document at the Garrison Church, date March 17th, 1832, declared that a school house should be built at the northern end of the precinct and it was here that a young Edmund Barton, first Prime Minister of Australia, was one of the pupils.
