Artist's Description

he pulled the door,
turning the old metal ring,
and swung it toward him
slowly opening

with a loud deep groan,
like floor boards on stairs
he took a deep sigh
overcame his fears

then stepped through
turned left
and found the stairs

winding and narrow
spirals of stone
higher and higher
they seemed to go on

he couldn’t see up
he couldn’t see down
so he kept climbing up
around and around

somewhere above him
a sound seemed to echo
a ringing and clanging
a loud kind of banging

eagerly he hurried
excitement now built
and pulled him up
to the top step with help

and there before him
was a wonderful thing
six young people
swinging and ringing

the bells of the tower

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is the _side_door of St Saviour’s Anglican Cathedral in Goulburn, NSW, Australia. But it doesn’t lead directly into the church. It is the door through which you go to enter the bell tower, whose bells are named after the ships in the First Fleet.
