In March 2013, I hung prints of my art at a wine bar in Denver. After getting all the work up on the walls, I hung out at the bar with my sketchpad for the next 4 hours and drew this while I chatted with people and sipped on a glass of wine. The opening show was the following Friday so I scanned the new drawing and had prints ready for the show. It’s neat to be able to create something and have it available to offer to people so quickly.
The drawing is called Number One Box, which is just a plain reference to how the image started. I started by drawing a square, and branching out from there, adding other shapes and patterns until I finished the drawing. The square I started with has a little “1” in the corner. I am considering coloring this image digitally and offering it separately.
I used Copic Multiliner SP pigment-based pens. The paper is from a pad of Strathmore Mixed Media 300 series 90lb. paper. It’s 11″ × 14″ and comes in pads of 40 sheets. Other than Arches water color paper, Strathmore is by far my favorite brand of drawing paper. I use their recycled paper, and drawing paper products pretty often as well.
