John DeRossett was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and spent his formative years in the quiet town of Rowlesburg, West Virginia, where he attended high school. In 1984, seeking adventure and purpose, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving honorably until his discharge in 1988. His time in the Navy instilled in him a lifelong love of travel, discipline, and storytelling, with many of his experiences at sea inspiring his writing.
