New Years Day

Awake
At eight in the morning
With a hangover
And a cigarette
I stand at the window
And play the role of the groggy chimney

The rain falls on the morning street
And I observe
A lone man
On his way to work
With nary an umbrella or jacket
And I think to myself

I see a man
Who is determined
And knows what his priorites are
Places progress before self
Bearing the burden stoicly
Day after day

I see a fool
Who is determined to fail
And doesn’t know what to do
With his situation and self
Back straightened against the cold
Day after day

The smoke trails
As I am half awake
And half thinking
No life is a dream
And not a man a saint
But he who knows
He’s lost without direction
