Statement on Artistic Practice, May 2006, Describing Pre-realist Paintings and Drawing.

The twin emphases of my artistic practice are semi-abstract landscape painting and figure drawing.

Important in my painting is consideration of colour and composition, while the subject is used as an expressionist device. Landscape as an expressionist metaphor is a part of a rich tradition employed by Van Gogh, kandinsky and Pollock, all of whom are highly influential to me. Rarely is the act of painting merely a technical exercise, although it is imperative that skill be constantly tested and developed. The period of Art history of most interest to me occurs between French Impressionism and American Abstract expressionism and it is the painters of this period from whom I draw most of my knowledge.

Figure drawing is an important adjunct to my painting practice. My style is predominantly gestural and works are usually executed in either charcoal, crayon or pencil on paper. A strength of drawing is the directness of communication between perception of the subject’s visual structure, the movement of the hand and the description by the resulting line. Giacometti is a major inspiration.

Committed artistic practice must be supported by a rigorous intellectual framework. To this end, it is my belief that the artist must engender within themselves a habit of constant questioning. Notions such as the role of the artist in society and tradition in art loom large. Especially important is the question of what actually constitutes good art and the relative nature of individual taste can be reconciled with the desire for quality by artist and the art market alike.
