The Starling
People just don’t realise how good looking this little bird is up close’ a lot of people think they are just black as you can see not true’ I love this little bird and would like to promote and give It the true justice that they deserve.
Smaller than blackbirds, with a short tail, pointed head, triangular wings, starlings look black at a distance but when seen closer they are very glossy with a sheen of purples and greens.
Their flight is fast and direct and they walk and run confidently on the ground. Noisy and gregarious, starlings spend a lot of the year in flocks. Still one of the commonest of garden birds, its decline elsewhere makes it a Red List species.
They eat Insects and fruit.

stunning portrait of an overlooked bird – I’m with you, they are intricate and the irridescence is amazing. Great capture
Beautiful close up- I think the swarming masses of these birds- the huge flocks- are incredible, a spectacle of nature in deed, and as Anne says the irredescence (especially on your last starling portrait) is beautiful (Think I got carried away here! lol)
Love that you have so much passion for this bird. Think we would find so much more zest for life if we opened up our eyes and minds more.
they are stuuning the glossy colours are all different on each individual brilliant
