Artist's Description

The Muiderslot or castle of Muiden is a medieval castle at the mouth of the River Vecht. It controlled the traffic going up and down a very important traffic route from Utrecht to the Zuiderzee, the South Sea. From there boats would go on to the north of the Netherlands and to Germany. All this happened when Amsterdam was not more than a little village. Before that the Frisians, the Romans and the Vikings had come along …

The castle is the best-known castle of the Netherlands, also due to the fact that a circle of very cultured people lived here in the 17th century who had a great influence on Dutch literary culture at the time.
