Artist's Description

Standing at the quay of whatever harbour and looking down towards the water, many a little boy will have dreamt of far away. One day he would become a sailor or even a captain too, one day he would be going into the far-away-world where all the great and small ships went to which were visiting the harbour so regularly.

And standing at this particular place this little boy could dream not only about future journeys, but also about past adventures, about those magnificent sailing ships that crossed the seas and made Amsterdam a rich city.

This particular ship, the “Amsterdam”, however, – or rather the original version of it, as this is a replica built in the 1980s – was not one for dreams. It got lost after a heavy storm on the English coast near Hastings already on its first outward journey towards the Dutch East Indies in January 1749. For those who want to know more about it, there is some very interesting info at Wikipedia:
