Artist's Description

The townhall of Gouda is a fascinating building, one of the oldest townhalls in the Netherlands in gothic style. It was build it in 1448 to 1450, but due to the somewhat tricky economic position of Gouda at the time it took quite some time before it was definitely finished. It is quite intriguing to realize that the enormous market-place of Gouda did not exist at the time, but that the town-hall lay on a little island until 1603 and could only be reached by a small bridge.

Another shot for Joop! He grew up at Gouda before he emigrated to Australia with his parents 51 years ago. It is quite touching: he is my age, and I moved to the Netherlands 32 years ago, actually on the trails of one of the lovely Dutch girls. So in my case it was not emigration, but a sort of visit. It is only that this visit has lasted ever since … So we both can now look back to long year in a new country.
