Artist's Description

For Joop who emigrated from Gouda to Australia 51 years ago!

It was a fascinating sight, theis scene of “ijspret” (ice delight) on the marketplace of the beautiful little town of Gouda, so well-known because of the name of the wonderful Gouda brand of Dutch cheese. It was taken on 14th December 2007.

Why was it so fascinating? To answer this you will have to look very closely at the kids on this pre-Christmas little ice-ring which you find in so many Dutch towns and which have become very useful now as there is so little natural ice due to the clearly visible effects of the climate change.

All these kids were from a “black school” as it is called here. A “black school” is a school with a majority of 2nd- and 3rd-generation kids from imigrants from mediterranean countries like Marocco and Turkey.

It was such a nice sight to see these kids enjoy their visibly first experiences with a habit of learning to scate which is ever so typical for Dutch children. And it was a nice sight, too, which you cannot see here, to see many of their mothers standing at the side of the ring, looking with pride at the ice adventures of their offspring.
