Artist's Description

Dear friends,

Today I send you my spring greetings from Delft. The other day I enjoyed a marvellous afternoon in this little town, so well-known all over the world as the town of the famous 17th-century Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer. Busloads of other visiters crowded the place, I am afraid to say, but walking away a bit from the normal routes easily brings one to quite small canals with their beautiful little houses.
Today I send you a typical spring scene. The tower of the central church, the New Church, is a landmark of the town. It actually was finished in 1584, the same year that the revolutionary leader of the free Netherlands, Prince William of Orange, was murdered just a few hundred yards away. He is buried in the church, as are most later members of the house of Orange up to the present day.
There is only one church tower in the Netherlands that is higher than this one. It is the tower of the “Dom” at Utrecht, the “Domtoren”. You already know it from another shot.
I hope you all can enjoy spring just as much as I do. And to those in the southern hemisphere I send my best wishes for a lovely autumn, even though it is pretty hard to imagine here at present that down there you are experiencing the approach of the darker seasons.
