Artist's Description

The waterbusses from Rotterdam to Dordrecht are a real fast sort of water transport. Like speedboats they rush along the waterways, at least on certain stretches of them. You can see the power of the boat by the gush of water its double propellers leave behind it. Dear me, when the helmsman suddenly pushed into highest gear, I nearly fell overboard! Well, I exaggerate a little bit, but I certainly felt the shock and nearly lost my balance.

Here we look back along the River Nieuwe Maas towards Rotterdam, with the well-known Van Brienenoordbrug in the centre of the shot. It is well-known from the Dutch traffic news, as about 250 000 cars pass it per day, often enough with a lot of jamming as a result. Actually there are two parallel bridges of the same structure, the first built in the early 1960´s and the second in 1990. From this point of view it looks just like one bridge.
