Artist's Description

Who would imagine looking at this lovely pond today if he did not know its history that once it was a scene of death?
In the Dutch riverland of the Betuwe the high dikes keep the rivers from flooding the low-lying lands. In the past these dikes often broke. One of the latest desasters like this happened here in 1855.
Such a dike breach causes the formation of a kolk, due to the enormous power of the water masses streaming through the broken dike.
And it is such a old kolk which you see here and which today is just a lovely pond. If you look closely, however, you will see that a high dike is built around it. The name of the pond is “Nieuwe Waai”, “waai” being the Dutch word for such a kolk.
