In Reverse

It is so strange to run in reverse, past old paths on the same earth.
To retrace a pace, already set, past places met and footprints stepped.
As if to rerun on a winter day the miles first traced in spring,
The chill silent limbs of the frozen trees, and birds chirping
A bare serenade of near frozen water.

The lone straggler meanders,
Through turns that once boasted proof of life, and now seem to wonder
At the silent sorrow sunshine’s blight, the cold eclipsed like summer’s night,
With slopes now turned to hills, and forests cut down to fields,
And visions blurred, and memories turned,
To fading thoughts returned.

I fear to run the final stretch, and pass the start all out of breathe,
To find myself done at the start, yet this time with a pounding heart.
It is so strange to run in reverse, and see at times the past come first.
