Artist's Description

Today was a good fox day. I got to spend over an hour with the alpha male within about 30 meters of me the entire time, much of the time it was less than 20 meters. For whatever reason, he was quite content to hang out near the den entrance most of the morning – guarding the entrance, I suspect.

I don’t think he was too worried about my presence; he ignored me for the most part, but was very aware of everything going on around him. The wind was picking up, so he had to be very wary (high winds keep them from hearing coyotes sneaking up on them).

He’s apparently been very successful in gathering food, as he stopped at several food caches to have a little snack. If he’s eating, it means his mate is well fed too (she’s inside the den, nursing the new kits and keeping them warm). He won’t eat if she’s hungry.
