Artist's Description

Like I said, hunting is hard work. It was late enough in the morning (about 9am) that she’s probably ready to bed down somewhere, after being up well before dawn. She’s yawning, not acting aggressive.

It’s worth noting that when animals are stressed, they can sometimes have some incongruent behaviors that can be an indication they feel threatened and can attack – yawning is one of those behaviors. I don’t think this yawn is an indication of that – she was very tolerant of me otherwise.

This is a concrete pad she’s on. There’s a concrete culvert system close by that I’m sure is part of it. Most of it is overgrown and I’m not sure how well it works, but the foxes use it for dens, cover, and to escape from the coyotes (they run into one of the openings and emerge yards away at a different opening.).
