Artist's Description

I was playing around at Crown Hill Park today with my dog, Kodi Bear (shot for Kodiak bear). That seems like a good name for him – whenever he meets someone new, they frequently say his face looks like a bear.

Kodi is an Akita, a Japanese breed of dog with a long history. They’re naturally hunters, and have a high prey drive. He spends his time on walks at Crown Hill hunting for field mice – and he enthusiastically lunges for them when he spots them – which is often. Nothing like having a 100 pound bundle of muscle lunge unexpectedly into the underbrush to keep you alert and on your toes. He uses the same tactic in the winter that I’ve seen foxes and coyotes use for hunting – he locates the prey under the snow by hearing, then jumps high in the air to land on his prey (don’t worry – despite his best efforts, he’s never caught anything – he’s always on a leash).

As white Akitas are fairly rare, if you see one in Lakewood or some mountain trail in the Front Range, it’s probably Kodi. Feel free to stop and say hi.
