Artist's Description

This is a Pika, relative of rabbits & hares. They spend their short summer gathering & drying alpine grasses & plants for their long winter. They don’t hibernate. The snow has partially melted above 14,000, but this little guy is already busy. I’ve kept track of this particular pika over the last few years (my son has named him “Larry”).

Pika are considered a “canary in the coal mine” species as they’re very vulnerable to warming and environmental changes. Pika are also difficult to photograph. They’re small (about the size of a small to medium potato), blend in well with their surroundings, run between and under rocks in the talus, and seems to be constantly on the move.

location: Mt Evans, CO
