Artist's Description

A beautiful male hummingbird with violet head and gorget (throat patch). The color is irridescent at different times depending on the light or sun. Other times it will look black with a slight tinge of purple showing thru. The male costa’s can weight up to 3.0 pounds, Females are slightly heavier at normally 3.5 pounds. This male is resting on the feeder perch in this garden in Palm Desert, California. I will sometimes have as many as 20 birds flying around at the same time to get the nectar out of my 3 feeders. They stay here in the desert until it get too cold for them and then they head off further south. In this case Mexico. They will be leaving here shortly as we are coming into our colder weather now. Both the male and female normally have a grey/green tinge to the chest area and wings. They wrap their feet around whatever they need to hang on. One of God’s beautiful creatures.
