Artist's Description

The Anzac War Memorial, Sydney, designed by C Bruce Dellit, is one of the finest examples of Art Deco architecture in Australia.

The building has always held a fascination for me. The strong, elegantly symmetrical exterior imposes the structure’s purpose of quiet reflection, honour and remembrance, on all those who pass by.

But it is the sculptural works of Raynor Hoff that demand total attention. The stone statues and cast bas reliefs on the exterior always draw long, searching admiration from the many who stop to look more closely.

Once inside though, Hoff’s cast bronze masterpiece – Sacrifice – totally focuses the observer. It demands total silence and in that silence its simple, single message – Sacrifice – inspires and humbles.
