Artist's Description

Museum III (Phar-Lap)

As a child, I distinctly remember seeing Phar-Lap in the foyer of the old museum on Swanston Street. At the time we lived an hour away from Melbourne and a visit to the big smoke was an event. I don’t remember what I made of him, other than being impressed by his size and presence. For a young boy, there was also something a little macabre about Phar-Lap. After all, his skin was in Melbourne but we were told his heart and bones were elsewhere.

I’m not a fan of racing or even horses, especially, but whenever I visit the museum, Phar-Lap is always the first exhibit I head for. As an adult, I’m still impressed by his size and his nobility- but, at the same time, I also find the experience a little bit sad. He often looks kind of lonely, there in his case.

That’s what I’ve tried to convey with my painting.
