Holding On

leaning sedately back in the solid wooden rocker she
stares through the rain spotted window. outside a
fleeting wind races through barren branches and they
shudder against the pumpkin sky. she mingles in
thought as she watches ghostly shapes of stormy clouds
tumble above the pensive little town. all the while muffed
ears and rough red noses bustle about quickly to
accomplish last minute tasks.

her room grows consistently darker and details fade
from sight only to leave large shadows looming out
from the walls still…the rhythmic sway of her rocker
continues into dusk. her thoughts are transcended to
a far away place where winter had not yet come. she
pondered deeply about her near forgotten youth and
reminisced her courtship. she unearthed many old
memories of her first and only love. the hay rides, the
the gift of a hastily picked flower and strolling under
lilacs that tenderly shed petals upon her face.

growing still quieter the town is nearly in slumber now
and winter winds streak down the road leaving in their
wake frenzied snowflakes twisting and diving in the air.
billowing from chimney tops the smoke is hanging low
in the frozen air. it engulfs the town as does nights
silence on tiptoes of deftness nights din is quenched and
quietly sifts around the frozen trees and stones and silently skulks
about until it has stolen the last drop of daylight.

she knows there will not be another daybreak for
her eyes will close in darkness. she knows that frozen
earth and harsh black trees will be the last season she will
see. still she sees beauty… beauty even in the looming
shadows and streaking cold wind. beauty in snow spattered
windows and forgotten youth. she is wise to these things
for she has seen them all all that her lifetime will allow.

the room is silent now… day is gone. the rocking chair
stops and her arm delicately drapes over the side. in
her half relaxed grip is a dainty spring flower… from whence
did it come… perhaps from memories…perhaps she will
still hold onto beauty even now
