When I was given the theme of “spirited away” to create a new painting, the image that entered my mind was a scene of a baby and an otherworldly woman riding through a snow storm, on a reindeer with bells on its antlers. They may be passing from one world into another, accompanied by some curious red cardinals. I love the winter palette, and wanted to create a painting evocative of a winter’s fairy story.
Technical stuff: Windsor-Newton watercolours, goache and Caran d’Ache pencils on Daler-Rowney 130lbs Heavyweight paper (roughly 9 by 13 inches).

How beautiful! Love this completely!
I love it. The red cardinals add just the right touch to the winter colors and flowing garments of the mother and child. This is “otherworldly” in a positive way, encouraging us that perhaps other worlds are not so much to be dreaded.
