Artist's Description

Pont du Gard, southern France

The Pont du Gard is an ancient Roman aqueduct bridge that spans the Gard River in southern France. It was built in the 1st century AD, and is the highest Roman aqueduct bridge in the world. It once carried 200 million litres of water a day to the fountains, baths, and homes in the city of Nîmes.

This photograph was taken from the second level of the aqueduct, which provides a wonderful view of the mid-afternoon cast shadow.
