Artist's Description

Here are drawings of a variety of doorways that caught my attention during our two week trip to Italy in ‘98. I’d only done minimal pen sketching prior to this trip, but was resolved to create a sketchbook of Italian scenes that could stand up with drawings I’d seen friends return with from their travels. I travel and did my drawings in a 5″ × 8″ Canson sketchbook.
The upper left is an early effort done the first morning in Siena… as is the next. The center one is a few days later in Florence and the one with stairs is about 3/4 way through our trip in Assisi. The drawing in the lower right is one I’m still very proud of. It was very fast, probably a must have capture but no time to stop and draw. It shows the broken ancient carved stones at the doorway sides and the worn stones from the centuries of use. I drew the essentials with a confidence of line that a week and a half of constant drawing afforded me.
