This drawing follows the ‘night scene’ of the same Siena Cathedral I loaded recently. The following morning, after a restless night of jet lag and exhaustion, we headed out for a full daylight tour of this amazing hilltop city. I headed down some similar streets that I knew I’d lost my way on the night before. These led me to the front facade of Siena’s primary Cathedral.
Out came my Canson sketchbook and I bravely began drawing. I soon realized I was way over my head. Way too much detail… an enormity of a drawing challenge well beyond my new drawing endeavor’s skills. I had to stop, admit a valiant defeat… and with relief walk away.
Yet, there’s still something to this sketch. Maybe another artist can appreciate similar circumstances and the learning that comes from even the work… that didn’t work out! I scribbled, the word ‘gold’ up on the right tower… to remind myself years later that there was much gold details glittering in the bright morning sun. Now (this note really says;-))) ‘how am I supposed to capture THAT in a B & W drawing???
The next few days taught me much. I derived what I called my “Policy of SELF Forgiveness” from drawings like this. When a pen line goes askew or like here doesn’t progress per plan… “Forgive Yourself! AND make the best of it!” Drawing skill doesn’t come with birth, but from practice!
