I found this drawing buried in a sketchbook from 1998. I was in a hotel room and still hadn’t dissipated the itch to sketch some more. When I sat on the edge of the bed I realized there were two identical mirrors on either side of the bed… and by adjusting my position I could get the angle of view such as to see myself, front then back, reflecting back into infinity.
I remember enjoying doing this drawing, seeing it as an experiment. As I started to draw the second face I realized I needed my glasses to see it, so as a joke I drew the glasses on only the second face. I also chuckled when my rear view showed my ever growing bald spot, which I don’t usually walk around being aware of. I don’t think self-portraiture is about fixing my self-delusions, rather revealing the distinguishing blemishes I’ve acquired through life.
