Artist's Description

I had originally set out to paint a seascape that could reflect the ocean in the Russian science fiction movie ‘The Sea Named Solaris’, where Solaris is a planet consisting entirely of a sea of plasma that is also a living creature with its own powers of reasoning. I had heard the music of Cosmos in the television series by Dr Carl Sagan in 1980 in which the Japanese musician Isao Tomita, influenced by JS Bach, creates a masterpiece that depicts Solaris musically.

In the course of the painting my intentions began to change in subject matter but the luminism style I strove to achieve remained and the seascape began to be heavily influenced by Russian marine art of the nineteenth century. The title Uncharted Shores is meant to refer to my own hesitancy in fulfilling the originally idea of Solaris.
