Maria & the Street-Corner Abuelo.

The tarnished man’s fingers clasp
her hand like sandpaper
manacles,
tearing like the cuffs of
Campos at Ponce (he thinks),
rough against
the hide of her edges, eyes meeting
which grasp unperspiring knife-edges,
voice croaking
and fingers tapping the sidewalk
that lively tumbao jumping
into the crevices of her memory.
(Sus primos dan
una caminata
under the Flamboyan trees:
red leaves walking
por historia
crushed by sunsets).
watch him live
in the sockets of Ditmas.

Maria & the Street-Corner Abuelo.
